This week the Indonesia Investment Authority (known as INA) signed two agreements to invest US$ 2.7 billion in three parts of the Trans-Sumatra toll-road as well as in two parts of the Trans-Java toll-road. When finished, the former will cover 2,818 km across the Western island while the latter will be smaller at 1,167 km and will link the country’s (current) capital city, Jakarta. The total cost of both projects is estimated at over US$ 40 billion.

The conflict in Ukraine and the effects of sanctions on Russia have dealt a major blow to Russia’s National Wealth Fund (NWF), which saw its total assets under management plunge 11.5% to US$154.8 billion, and is likely to freeze the ability of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) to secure inward investment.

Sovereign Investors have different degrees of exposure to Russia and to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). On the one hand, Middle Eastern funds have been increasing their allocation into the region for the past few years, and Asian countries continue to be some of Russia’s most important trading partners. On the other hand, European and, especially, North American, pensions had already been divesting positions due to geopolitical risk.

Vietnam’s State Capital Investment Corporation became the latest state-owned investor to throw a lifeline to a troubled national carrier, announcing plans this week to invest US$345 million in Vietnam Airlines. The move follows the Vietnam’s National Assembly approval in November of a support package for the airline, after reporting losses or approximately US$520 million in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
